Mustard vs Robot Bike Co.

Custom brand Mustard is collaborating with 3D-printing specialists Robot Bike Co. to bring new frame building tech to bespoke road and gravel bikes.

Available in early 2018, bespoke Mustard frames will have a 3D printed Ti/carbon construction option.

3D printing has been an exciting new development in custom bike building. This groundbreaking new technology enables absolute customisation, creating one-off engineering components across all engineering disciplines, including bicycle design.

The off-road world has been fastest to embrace the possibilities of 3D printing tech. And south-Wales-based Robot Bike Co. has been working hard on bringing the miracles of bespoke 3D printed bikes to market: combining 3D printed titanium lugs with carbon tubes.

It’s now time to bring this technology to the road, and the the world of gravel bikes. Sussex-based brand Mustard has been offering bespoke titanium and steel options since 2011, but director Stephen Roche has been looking for something new and exciting. That’s why he approached Robot Bike Co., about bringing their 3D know-how out of the woods and onto the road.

Available through Brighton-based boutique suppliers Prestige Cycles, Mustard already has a custom offering, beginning with detailed measurement from director and bike-fit specialist Stephen Roche, whose fitting techniques combine painstaking measurement with computer calculation and windtunnel analysis.

Previously offering steel and titanium, Stephen is now excited about offering another construction option within the Mustard range. “I’ve always been impressed by the technology the Robot guys have pioneered. So I approached them about how we could make something very very special for the road and gravel markets.” says Stephen.

The result will be a custom-measured, bespoke-built Mustard road or gravel frame that borrows materials science from the off-road creations of Robot Bike Co.

It’s not just the angles that will be custom - the options of 3D printing enable the ultimate level of customisation - cable routing, discs or caliper brakes, electronic gear systems can all be accommodated and designed right into the frame. Each bike will suit its owner perfectly.
